2014-2015 Calendar Change

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Comments (1)

When I was growing up school would almost always be over and summer vacation would begin around Memorial Day. As the years went by the ending date for school seemed to get pushed back for a variety of reasons and last year school ended on Friday, June 13. This past spring, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) dropped the requirement that schools must meet for 180 days. They kept the rule regarding how many minutes students must go to school at each grade level, but they allowed local school...

Review of Kehoe-Henry Study

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

As I go to various school and community events, I have people ask me why the school district would want to build a new elementary school when we can fix up the current Elementary School for half that price. When people make this type of comment, I think they are making reference to the Kehoe-Henry study that was done for the Board of Education in 2009-2010. After responding to these comments and thinking about them, I felt it might be appropriate to take a few minutes to review what the Kehoe-Henry...

Current and Future Construction Costs

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Comments (1)

Recently a comment was made by an individual that he was going to vote “No” on the referendum the first time in the belief that the Board would come back with a lower cost proposal in the future. I felt that this thought needed to be addressed and to let people know that the current proposal is the lowest cost option for a new school. The Board has been working hard for the past two years to come up with a plan that would address the educational needs of the school district while at...

How Do You Design a School Building?

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Comments (1)

During the past year, the Board, staff and community have worked together to come up with a solution to replace our aging Elementary School. During this process, one item that was brought up numerous times dealt with the design of the new elementary school. People wanted to know, “What will this new building look like?” and “How will it work with the current Junior/Senior High School?’ So I guess the question is, “How does a school building get designed?” I...

How to Get Information on the Upcoming Elementary School Referendum

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

As a popular game show host once stated, “You asked for it and you’ve got it” applies to the visual representations of the new elementary school. This past summer, teachers, administrators, Board members and representatives from Eppstein Uhen Architects and Scherrer Construction worked to develop interior and exterior renderings for the new elementary school. These rendering are now available for you to view on our district website www.williamsbayschools.org. I also wanted to...

Junior/Senior High School Energy Efficiency Project Update

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

If you have had the opportunity to either drive past or stop into the Junior/Senior High School building over the summer, you will have noticed a great deal of activity going on both inside and outside of the building. The work that you have been seeing is the result of implementing several energy efficiency upgrades to the building. This past February, the Board of Education reviewed an energy audit prepared by H&H Energy Management on our current Junior/Senior High School. The current Junior/Senior...

Memorial Day

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

On Monday, May 26, our nation will be celebrating Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer, but more importantly a time to reflect upon the ultimate sacrifice that men and women have made in order for our country to remain free. They gave their life so that we may live in a country that is free – free to speak and publish our thoughts, ideas and opinions; free to worship in a manner of our own choosing, free to bear arms and free to meet in groups and organizations of our choice. I know...

Catching Up and Looking Forward

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

Last night, my wife and I had the opportunity to go to our first Williams Bay High School Art Auction and Collage Concert – it was a great time. I enjoyed walking around and looking at the different art projects and seeing the creativity and artistic ability of our students. I will admit that though I appreciate art, I do not claim to have any artistic ability – in fact, I usually tell people that I cannot draw a stickman with a ruler. However, I do have the ability to recognize this...

Reflections

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Comments (1)

Winter seemed to hang on for a long time this year, in fact, I am not certain that it has ended. Nevertheless, the end of the 2013-2014 school year is quickly coming to an end. As the end of the year approaches, I thought it would be appropriate to reflect on my first year at Williams Bay and let you know my thoughts about the school district and community. First and foremost, I think the people in this school district and community are phenomenal. I enjoy coming to work each day because the...

Inclement Weather Make-Up Schedule

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

On Tuesday, April 22, 2014, the schedule at the Junior High and High School will change in order to meet the required face-to-face instructional minutes assigned by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). The DPI requires all school districts to meet at least 180 days each year and also a defined number of hours of direct instruction. Direct instruction is defined as the time between the start of the first class period and the end of the last class period each day. A student’s lunch...

Open Enrollment

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

In reviewing the comments from last week’s Community Forum, one topic that people were interested in learning more about was “Open Enrollment” and its relationship to the referendum for a new Elementary School. In the following blog, I will try to present you with a brief history of Open Enrollment, how the program works in the State of Wisconsin and its impact on the Williams Bay School District. However, I think that it is important to start off by clarifying that the Board...

More Student Accomplishments

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Comments (1)

Since my last blog, our students have continued to represent the Williams Bay School District in many exceptional and outstanding ways. Last Saturday, my wife and I had the pleasure of seeing the student production of Alice @ Wonderland. The students did a fantastic job of retelling the classic Lewis Carrol story in a modern setting. As a former drama coach, I could truly appreciate all of the hard work and effort that went into the production. The students did an excellent job with their lines...

Fine Arts Accomplishments

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

Fine Arts Accomplishments I am always so proud of our staff and students for their hard work and dedication. I wanted to highlight two recent examples of how our staff and students have done a fantastic job of representing the Williams Bay School District.   The first accomplishment that I would like to share with you is the success our music department had at the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) solo/ensemble contest that was held on Saturday, March 1, 2014. Williams Bay had...

Energy Performance Contract Update

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

On Monday, February 3, the Board of Education had a special Board of Education meeting to review an energy audit on our current Junior/Senior High School.  This audit was prepared by H&H Energy Management from Madison, Wisconsin.  H&H Energy Management has spent the last four months examining our building and mechanical systems in order to determine what upgrades or life expectancy replacement projects could and should be done on the current Junior/Senior High School in order...

The Board of Education will soon be adopting the calendar for the 2014-2015 school year. Before they adopt the calendar, they would like to have input from the staff and community regarding your feelings about the calendar and any changes that you might suggest. You can access the draft 2014-2015 school calendar on the front page of our website. In addition to a copy of the draft calendar, a short survey is also posted asking your opinions about the proposed calendar. As you review the calendar,...

Posted by Dr. Wayne R. Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

During the past two weeks, each of you should have received a postcard from the Williams Bay School District thanking you for your participation in the District’s Facilities Planning Survey. It is the goal of the Board of Education to keep the community involved in its ongoing efforts to replace the current 1916 Elementary School with an up-to-date educational structure on the District’s 80 acre site that is the home to our 1996 Junior/Senior High School. In an effort to provide you...

Inclement Weather Days

Posted by Dr. Wayne R. Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

By now I believe that everyone is ready for school to be back in session. As I write this blog, I have to admit that this is the first time in my career that I have had to cancel school for three days in a row and there is still a great deal of winter left to go. Though almost everyone looks forward to an occasional inclement weather day (the official name for a snow day), the question that most people ask once the day, or in this case days, are over is, “Do we have to make these days up?” In...
