Facilities Update

Posted by Dr. Wayne R. Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

Throughout the school year, I will be doing blogs to update everyone on the status of the facilities referendum. If at any time, you have questions regarding our facilities or the upcoming referendum, please feel free to contact me by telephone at (262) 245-1575 or email at wanderson@williamsbayschools.org. On Monday, December 16, the Board of Education conducted a work session on facilities planning. During the next several weeks, I will be writing a series of blogs that deal with the major...

Generosity

Posted by Dr. Wayne R. Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

As I look out on the snow, winter now seems to have truly arrived at the Bay. In the spirit of the season, I wanted to take a moment to express how proud I am of the students, staff and community for their generosity and willingness to help people. Since the beginning of the school year, I have witnessed a multitude of activities that were designed to help people both in our local community and the broader community outside of our district. Walking through the commons at the Junior High/High...

December Events

Posted by Dr. Wayne R. Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

I hope that each of you had a great Thanksgiving. I spent most of the break with my grandsons Sam (4) and Gordie (3). We went to the Thanksgiving Day parade in Chicago – it was my first Thanksgiving Day parade and we put out our lawn chairs at 5:30 a.m. to make sure we had a front row seat to see the bands and floats. My daughter made the traditional Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. It was a great holiday filled with family, food and festivities. Now...

Kehoe-Henry Study

Posted by Dr. Wayne R. Anderson in General  |  Comments (1)

Have you ever made assumptions and then found out later that your assumptions were wrong. I have, and one example is the assumptions that I made regarding the Kehoe-Henry study that was done for the Board of Education in 2009-2010. When I first came to the district and started to become involved in the facility discussion, the Kehoe-Henry study was mentioned and people talked about the price quoted in the study as being between $8,000,000 and $11,000,000 to fix the building. My assumption when...

Snow Day Decisions

Posted by Dr. Wayne R. Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

As I look out the window and watch the weather forecasts, I have come to the realization that Winter is finally here and with the advent of winter comes the possibility of snow days and either delays or early releases due to inclement weather. So before the first snow fall arrives, I thought it might be a good time to update the staff and community on how the decision to delay or cancel school is determined. There is no magic formula for when school will be delayed, let out early or closed. The...

Budget Process for 2014-15

Posted by Dr. Wayne R. Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

On Monday night the Board of Education passed the budget for the 2013-2014 school year. The budget that was passed kept the tax rate or mill rate at the same level it was for the 2012-2013 school year, which was .0068. Simply stated that means that you will pay $680 for every $100,000 of your equalized property value. If your house has an assessed value of $250,000; the school portion of your tax bill would be $1,700. If the value of your house has remained the same over the past year, then the...

The Fine Arts - Improving Education and Life

Posted by Dr. Wayne R. Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

Reading, writing and arithmetic – the mainstay of traditional education, but what if we added an additional three R’s like rehearsal, rhythm and reflection. On Monday night, my wife and I were privileged to listen to our junior and senior high choirs perform to a packed house. As I listened to their lovely voices, it reminded me that education is greatly enriched by the arts. The arts provide us with creative ways to express our ideas, emotions and viewpoints. Williams Bay is fortunate...

Public Complaint Policy

Posted by Dr. Wayne R. Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

One of the main reasons that I enjoy working in education is because of the great people: students, staff and community members that I am able to associate with on a daily basis. However, whenever we work with people there is always the chance of conflict. Conflict is not always bad; sometimes conflict gives individuals the opportunity to clarify a position or belief. But when a conflict fails to be resolved; like is currently happening with the government shutdown or the looming debt ceiling,...

Operation Click- Safe Driving

Posted by Dr. Wayne R. Anderson in General  |  Post a comment

Win a car!! How! By being safe – that’s right, students have the opportunity to win a brand new car just by promising to be a safer driver. One student in Walworth County will be the winner of a brand new automobile this year, just because they promised to become a safer more responsible driver. Under Operation Click, they made a promise and kept the promise. Operation Click was established in 1998 to help teenage drivers become safer, smarter and more responsible. By partnering with...

This week is filled with excitement as the students prepare for their Homecoming Football game against Martinsville, Illinois. The school doors are decorated with clever saying, streamers of black and orange are drapped from the ceiling and students/staff dress up in colorful outfits. Students participate in a wide variety of fun activities culminating with a bonfire on Thursday night and a parade on Friday. During the parade, classes will be able to show off their creative spirit by displaying...

Observations of a Crossing Guard, 9/23/13

Posted by Williams Bay Webmaster in General  |  Post a comment

As I drive past our elementary school each day, I notice our two crossing guards who help direct both student and vehicular traffic in order to provide a safe route for our students. While watching them at work, it brought back memories of when I took on the role of being a crossing guard at one of the elementary schools. I volunteered to take on this role because our regular crossing guard had taken a new position and it would take some time to hire a new crossing guard. I will admit that I thoroughly...

Inservice Days, 9/18/13

Posted by Williams Bay Webmaster in General  |  Post a comment

“Hey Mom! I get out of school early next week.” “Why?” “Teachers have an Inservice in the afternoon.” “Inservice, what do teachers do at inservice?” This is a fairly typical conversation that happens in households each year. Students get out of school early and parents and other adults want to know why. The best and shortest answer that I have to this question is that this time is used to provide professional development time and programs to...

Common Core Standards Summary, 9/10/13

Posted by Williams Bay Webmaster in General  |  Post a comment

There has been a great deal of discussion about the upcoming Common Core Standards that will be used by Wisconsin and most of the states in our union. However, I thought it might be helpful to provide some basic information on what these standards are and what role they will play in education in the near future. The first basic piece of information that is essential is the understanding that education is the responsibility of the State, not the federal government. When our Constitution was written,...

This is certainly a testament to the hard work our students, Pre-K -12 staff and Board of Education have put in to provide a rigorous academic curriculum for all students. On Friday, September 13, the Williams Bay Athletic Boosters and the Williams Bay School and Community Association (SCA) will be hosting the third annual Chili Kick-off prior to the Varsity Football game against Randolph High School. The festivities start at 5:00 p.m. and continue up to game time at 7:00 p.m. Though this will be my first time at the event, I am looking forward to sampling the many different varieties of chili created by both local businesses and individuals. I am also looking forward...
