Elementary Keyboarding Junior High Courses High School Courses

Elementary School

Third Grade Keyboarding

This course is designed to teach students the “touch” method of operating the keyboard. Students will learn the alphabetic, numeric, and symbol keys through the use of the software programs Microerrorchecker, Microsoft Word, Paws, and various keyboarding web sites. Students will learn proper techniques for building keyboarding speed and accuracy.

Junior High Courses

Computer 7

This course is designed to build upon the keyboarding skill learned in elementary school. Students will review and build upon existing word processing skills. Time will be spent building keyboarding speed. Students will learn how to use Microsoft Word to format research papers, format tables, add clipart, change text styles, and design their own work. This class is a nine week, required course.

Computer 8

This course is designed to introduce students to various applications that can be done using the computer. Students will learn basic word processing functions that will aid them in preparing assignments for other classes. The 10-key pad will be learned in order to enter numbers into a spreadsheet. They will learn basic spreadsheet and graphing applications. A unit on desktop publishing will be included which will allow students to incorporate text and graphics to create cards, posters, newspapers and brochures. Students will also design a web site using Microsoft Word. This class is a nine week, required course.

High School Courses

Accounting

Grades: 10-12 | Semester/Year Long | 1/2 or 1 credit | Elective

The student will learn the accounting procedures for a sole proprietor, partnership, and corporation.  Eddie Ortega, a proprietorship simulation, will give students hands on experience and knowledge of accounting as they do work for a personal water craft and sports store.  The student will learn how to use the computer to keep accounting records.  Recommended for students considering a career in business or in personal finance.

Computer Applications

Grades:  10-12 | 1 credit | Elective

This course is designed to give the student an understanding of the concepts and skills needed to survive in our computerized society. Students will learn how to use spreadsheets, databases, presentation software, as well as review basic desktop publishing concepts through the use of Microsoft Word. Desktop publishing with Microsoft Publisher will also be taught. The class will use Microsoft Office 2010 which is found in business as well as at college universities. This class is recommended for any student who would like to learn various computer applications, is planning on taking physics or chemistry, or is planning on attending a college.

Desktop Publishing

Grades:  10-12 | One Year | 1 credit | Elective

This course is designed to introduce the student to the basic layout, design, and terminology used in desktop publishing. The course will teach the student how to properly layout publications such as newsletters, brochures, posters, business cards, and letterheads. Students will produce projects that are used for various school functions. Students will also learn how to use the digital camera and scanner. During second semester, time will be spent on learning how to manipulate photos using Photoshop. Students will create collages, CD covers, placemats, and other photo documents.

Personal Finance

Grades:  9-12 | 1/2 credit | Semester | Elective

This course is designed to help the student understand their role as consumer, worker, and citizen in the world of finance. Students will learn about work related forms and laws, using and maintaining a checking account, filing federal and sate tax returns, budgeting, saving and investing, purchasing insurance, cars, and homes, renting, and using credit.

Web Design and Multimedia Applications

Grades:  10-12 | 1 credit | Year | Elective

Prerequisite:  Desktop Publishing strongly recommended or consent of instructor

This course is designed for students who are interested in learning how to create and manage professional looking web sites. Web page design will be taught through the use of Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks which are industry standards for designing and maintaining web sites. During second semester, students will learn web animation using Macromedia Flash. They will also learn how to do video editing using Microsoft Moviemaker and Adobe Premiere Elements.
