Football Season 2015 (9/1/15) //www.williamsbayschools.org/pro/bulletin/rss_posts.cfm?threadid=3&memberid=886 Dr. Anderson's Blog - Football Season 2015 (9/1/15) en-us Wayne Anderson //www.williamsbayschools.org/about/blog.cfm?posts=1&threadid=3#item_3 September has arrived and a new school year is at hand. However, prior to the first day of school many of our students have already been coming to school on a regular basis to be a part of an extracurricular team. Fall sports generally start in mid-August and by the start of school many of these teams have already seen competition. One of these co-curricular activities is football, which started at the beginning of August and saw their first game on Saturday, August 22 against Kenosha Christian and our first home game on Friday, August 28, against DeSoto.

This year our football team has a new coach named Alex Powell. He has done a nice job of working with our boys. He has a love and passion for the game of football that he enjoys passing on to his fellow coaches and players. This year, we have one major hurdle to overcome and that is the number of players that went out for the team. At the start of the football season, the team had about seventeen (17) boys this is down from last year. One of the reasons for this decline in numbers is that six (6) of our players graduated and only four (4) freshman came in to take their place. We expect that the numbers will continue to rise in the coming years, but this year our numbers are low and injuries have a major impact on our ability to play.

Last Friday night, we had several boys get injured; these injuries led to a great deal of discussion and some hard decisions. As much as Coach Powell loves the game of football, he puts the safety of his players first. As of Monday, August 31, our team was down to thirteen (13) players because of injuries. A football team can play with eleven (11) players, but this would mean that each player must play on both sides of the ball and never have a rest. Thirteen players mean that we have two young men who can substitute into the game to give someone else a breather. Alex Powell and the coaching staff approached Mike Coolidge, our Athletic Director, with their concerns about the safety of the players and had an idea that they wanted to explore. This idea was shared with the players and parents at a special meeting on Monday night. The idea was to cancel this Friday night’s football game with Cambria Friesland. Next Friday night was already a bye for our team because Hustisford canceled their football season for lack of numbers this summer. By not having a game for almost three weeks, the players would be given a chance to heal and get back to full strength for our next home football game on Friday, September 18 against Randolph. The coaches and players want to complete the football season and we hope that by forfeiting this Friday night’s game will give our players a chance to heal and fulfill this goal.

Our players and coaches have been giving this season their all and I fully supported the idea of forfeiting one game in the hope that this would allow us to finish the season.   The football team is scheduled to play at home on the following dates:

September 18 vs. Randolph

September 25 vs. Johnson Creek

October 2 vs. Rio (Homecoming)

October 16 vs. Westminister Christian (Parents' Night)

If you have any questions about our decision to cancel Friday night's game against Cambria Friesland, please feel free to contact either Mike Coolidge or myself.

I hope that you will be able to come out and support all of our student athletes. They appreciate your attendance and support – Go Bulldogs!
