Homecoming Week 2015 (9/29/15) //www.williamsbayschools.org/pro/bulletin/rss_posts.cfm?threadid=5&memberid=886 Dr. Anderson's Blog - Homecoming Week 2015 (9/29/15) en-us Wayne Anderson //www.williamsbayschools.org/about/blog.cfm?posts=1&threadid=5#item_5 We are now in Homecoming Week, a time when student and community pride for their school is extremely evident. This is the traditional time for alumni to come back home to support their home teams and relish memories of their own school days. Williams Bay has an educational tradition that spans over 100 years and people are proud to have gone to the “Bay” and to have their children or relatives go to the “Bay”. Though as I write this blog, the weather outside is a bit dreary, the spirits inside are sunny and bright.

This week is filled with activities. Dress-Up days are all week long and that is one reason that you may see me dressed up a little out of character. The Dress-Up days for students are as follows:

                                    Students                                 Staff

Monday                       Mismatch Day                         Favorite Sports Team

Tuesday                       Throw Back Day                     Crazy Hat Day

Wednesday                 Western Day                           College Sweatshirt/T-Shirt Day

Thursday                     Spirit T-Shirt Day                    Pajama/Blanket Day

Friday                          Orange and Black Day           Orange and Black Day

If you saw me on Monday, you might have noticed that I got mixed up and dressed up according to the student day and not the staff day – my offbeat shirt and tie did get people’s attention, even though several were too polite to tell me.

Students and staff are now busy building their floats that will be displayed during our Homecoming Parade on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The parade route was changed this year due to the road construction on Geneva Street. The parade will line up on Highland Avenue and then make a right on Congress Street. I will be announcing the different groups in front of the Elementary School. The parade will then go down the hill and make a left on Walworth Avenue and the parade will end at the intersection of Walworth and Geneva Streets. If you have the opportunity to come out and watch the parade, I know that the students and staff would appreciate your attendance.

On Wednesday night, the girls will have their powder-puff football game on the game field starting at 5:15 p.m. Then on Thursday night, the boys will have their volleyball game at 7:00 p.m. and the bonfire will immediately follow the boys’ volleyball game – around 8:00 p.m. It is also a tradition that high school students toilet paper the boulevard on Thursday night. Prior to this event, we have the police department talk to our students so that they understand the rules and what they are not permitted to do during the week. The week is to have fun, but never to destroy or damage another person’s property. On Friday morning, the students will go and clean up the boulevard and then get ready for the parade on Friday afternoon. The football game against Rio will start at 7:00 p.m. and the Homecoming Dance is Saturday at 8:00 p.m. in the High School Lecture Center.

This year the alumni have also organized a Homecoming Dance, which will be held in the Elementary School gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 3. Prior to the alumni dance the Elementary School will be open for tours starting at 3:00 p.m. History Club students under the supervision of Mrs. Soplanda will be serving as tour guides. The organizers of the alumni event have asked people to bring pictures, memorabilia and great stories of your time in the “Bay”. Everyone is welcome. The alumni events are scheduled to end around 10:00 p.m.

This week is different from most of our school weeks, but some things remain constant. Student and staff pride in their school are evident each day of the year. People become very attached to this school because “people count” and belonging to this school as a past or current student or staff member makes you a part of a family. Family members might sometimes have their differences, but they always rally together and support each other. As I have mentioned many times in the past, I feel very fortunate to be a part of such a great school district and community. Come out this week – join us in the celebration and take time to remember some of your own high school memories.
