Fitness Center - Community Use

Posted by Wayne Anderson in General  |  Comments (3)

It is not yet New Year’s Eve, so most of us have not started making our resolutions for how we are going to change our lifestyle for the new year. Two of the most common New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight and get in better shape. These two almost always make it on to my list of resolutions. If these goals interest you, you do not have to wait for the new year to begin – you can start on November 1, 2016, this is when the new fitness center will be open to the residents of the Williams Bay School District.

The creation of the new fitness center was included in the construction of our new elementary school. It was designed to be used by our students in their physical education classes, by our athletes as they prepare for competition and by our staff and community members. The fitness center has its own outside entrance so that it can be separated from the rest of the Elementary school and Middle/High School. It also has locker rooms complete with showers and lockers so that individuals have a place to change into their workout gear and clean up at the conclusion of their workout.

The fitness center is set up with cardio equipment, weight lifting machines and free weights. I especially like the new tread mills and bikes as I attempt to regain some of my lost youthful vitality and reduce some weight so that I can get back into some pants that have been pushed to the back of my closet. In order to assist community members in using the fitness center, the district has employed several staff members to act as fitness center supervisors. They are easy to spot because they will be wearing an orange t-shirt with the words “Fitness Center Supervisor” printed on the front of their shirts.

The fitness center supervisors are employed to promote the safe and effective use of the fitness center outside of the normal school day. They will help community members learn how to use the different types of equipment and insure that the fitness center is being used for the purposes it was designed.

The fitness center will be open to the community at the following times:

1)      In the morning from 5:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.;

2)      In the evening from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and

3)      Saturday mornings from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

These hours may be changed or adjusted in the future to better meet the needs of the school and community. The fitness center will only be open on days when school is in session with the exception of Saturday morning. As we get closer to winter break and summer, we will post a schedule for vacation and summer hours on our website.

There was a great deal of discussion on what fees should be associated with using the fitness center. The School Board wanted to make certain that residents of the Williams Bay School District, who supported the construction of the fitness center through their tax dollars, were able to use the fitness center at a very low cost. The Board of Education finally agreed upon the following fee structure:

1)      Williams Bay School District Residents will be charged a yearly fee of $25 individual or/$40 family maximum (year is designated from July 1 through June 30) or a daily rate of $2;

2)      Senior Citizens (age 65 or older) who live in the Williams Bay School District and college students, who have graduated from Williams Bay High School will be charged a yearly fee of $15 individual or /$30 family maximum or a daily rate of $2;

3)      Open Enrollment families will be charged $50 individual or /$80 family maximum or a daily rate of $5; and

4)      Non-residents who choose to use the fitness center will be charged a yearly fee of $200 individual/$400 family maximum (year is designated from July 1 through June 30) or a daily rate of $5.

The first time that an individual uses the fitness center he/she will be asked to fill out a Waiver of Liability and Hold Harmless Agreement prior to using the facility. A copy of this completed waiver will be kept on file by the school district. Individuals who pay the yearly fee will be able to use either a valid photo identification card to prove residency or they will be issued a fitness center identification card. Individuals who are paying the daily rate must pay with cash.

Individuals using the fitness center will be expected to work out in proper attire and use the equipment in the appropriate manner. If the fitness center supervisor determines that an individual is not using the equipment in an appropriate manner or is causing a disturbance to other users, the individual will be asked to leave the fitness center by the fitness center supervisor.

A complete copy of the Fitness Center Usage policy and the waiver form can be found posted on our website.

I hope that many of you will take the opportunity to use this beautiful facility. It was designed with the community in mind.
