Special Education

The Williams Bay School District is dedicated to meeting the needs of all students.  We offer a variety of services through our programs and services to make our students with diverse needs successful.  In the district, we have a team of four special education teachers, two speech language pathologists, one school psychologist, and the services of an occupational therapist and physical therapist through CESA-2.

The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) requires us to provide our students with disabilities a free and appropriate public education (FAPE).  We provide FAPE through the least restrictive environments for students, as planned for in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).  If you have any questions regarding special education and the services offered, please contact Chris Colosimo School Psychologist.

The local educational agency identifies, locates, and evaluates all children with disabilities, regardless of the severity of the disability, who are in need of special education and related services.  The local educational agency accepts and processes referrals of children, by contacting Kassie McOmber, School Psychologist, with a written statement including the student's name and the reasons why the person who is making the referral believes that the child is a child with a disability.

As part of a special education evaluation, the IEP team, including qualified professionals, reviews existing data on the child and identifies what additional information may be needed.  The local education agency provides the parents/guardians with proper written notice of any evaluations that are proposed to be conducted and the names who will conduct the evaluation, if known.  Informed consent is obtained from the student's parent or guardian prior to administration of any assessments.

Following a review of existing data and the administration of assessments and other evaluation materials (if any), the IEP team determines whether the child is or continues to be a child with a disability.  In interpreting evaluation data for the purpose of determining if a child is a child with a disability, and the educational needs of a child, the local educational agency draws upon information from a variety of sources, including parent/guardian input, teacher recommendations, physical condition, social or cultural background, and adaptive behavior.

If a student is determined to be a child with a disability, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) will be developed with appropriate team members, including parents/guardians.  The local educational agency ensures each child's IEP is accessible to each regular education teacher, special education teacher, related service providers and any other staff member responsible for the implementation.  The IEP team is reviewed periodically (at least once per year), to determine if the annual goals for the child are being achieved and the IEP is revised as appropriate.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Chris Colosimo, Director of Special Education.
